Synopsis

Erykah Badu’s 1997 debut won the 1998 Grammy Awards for Best R&B Album, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, as well as nominations for Nest New Artists and Best R&B song, for Baduizm’s lead single ‘On And On’, which reached No 2 on the Billboard chart. A return to the more simplistic soul of the early 1970s, Vibe reckoned the album “reaches for the joyful, exacting vocal arrangements of the Sweet Inspirations and the Emotions,” and by Q magazine as “a warm thoroughly idiosyncratic record which mixes jazz, soul and a slice or two of hip hop into a rich, smoky musical brew”.
