Synopsis

Slowhand, Eric Clapton’s 1977 solo album, features three staples of the guitar maestro’s career, starting with his near definitive take on J.J. Cale’s ‘Cocaine’, the ballad ‘Wonderful Tonight’ (a song he wrote for Pattie Boyd), then followed by the country tinged ‘Lay Down Sally’, the latter ably demonstrating Clapton’s versatility as an artist and musician. Named after a nickname first given to him during his days as a Yardbird in the mid-60s, the album reached No. 2 in the US and according to Rolling Stone, “Glyn Johns' production is superb—the guitar/drums relationship is crisp and authoritative, powerhouse Clapton caught in a glimpse of white hot frenzy.” Featuring a cover of Don Williams’ ‘We’re All The Way’, Williams would repay the compliment by covering ‘Wonderful Tonight’ in 2003.
