Eric Clapton
461 Ocean Boulevard
Original Release: 1974
Synopsis
Clapton originally made his name as a guitarist in The Yardbirds, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, the influential power trio and supergroup Cream, before attempting to seek partial anonymity in Blind Faith, followed by Derek & the Dominoes. Named after Clapton’s address at the time, on Golden Beach in Miami, ‘461 Ocean Boulevard’ (1974) was Clapton’s second solo outing after the split of The Dominoes, and certainly gave him a greater mainstream following when it hit the top of the charts upon its release, aided by the release of a cover of Bob Marley’s ‘I Shot The Sheriff’. Described by Mojo as “A form-finding set, comedown as comeback”, and by Q as the album that “closed the chapter on Clapton as guitar hero and opened a new one as a hitmaker with a more relaxed and commercial style”.
