Eminem
The Marshall Mathers LP
Original Release: 2000
Synopsis
Eminem’s second release is also his most commercially successful, eventually selling in excess of 10 million copies in the US alone, making it the fastest selling rap record of all time. Featuring the massive hits ‘The Real Slim Shady’, ‘The Way I Am’ and ‘Stan’, this is a much more personal account than his more jocular debut, ‘The Slim Shady LP’. Despite many of its controversial lyrical themes enraging the censors, it didn’t stop an album that was described by the NME as a “Gruelling assault course of lyrical genius”, receiving four Grammy nominations in 2001, including Album Of the Year. Uncut’s review claimed, “You might not like where he’s dragging you, but there’s no denying the style with which he does it”.
