Dire Straits
Brothers In Arms
Original Release: 1985
Synopsis
Dire Straits' rise to international super status neatly coincided with the advent of MTV and eventual domination of the compact disc. This, the bands fifth studio record, was not only the first fully digital release, it was also the first CD to sell in excess of a million copies making it the first ever CD to out-sell its vinyl counterpart. The first track many would hear from the album was when the band performed lead single ‘Money For Nothing’ at Live Aid in 1985 with Sting on backing vocals, who also co-wrote the track with Mark Knopfler. That appearance no doubt helping to propel the album to the top of the charts around the globe. A mid 80s chart behemoth of a record, the album features the singles ‘So Far Away’, the aforementioned ‘Money For Nothing’, ‘Walk of Life’, ‘Your Latest Trick’ and the melancholic title track. Brothers In Arms is the 5th best selling album of all time in the UK.
