Dio

Holy Diver

Original Release: 1983

Synopsis

Ronnie James Dio had already enjoyed a long and varied career before he found a perfect vehicle for his voice in the original incarnation of Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow, in 1975. Electing to replace Black Sabbath’s Ozzy Osbourne in 1979, (whilst Rainbow chose a more commercial direction), Ronnie recorded two classic studio albums and a strong double live LP with the Sabbs before embarking on his debut “solo” venture at the beginning of 1983, taking Sabbath drummer Vinny Appice with him. A huge hit on both sides of the Atlantic, Holy Diver is crammed with hard rock classics from the opening ‘Stand Up And Shout’, through to the title track ‘Holy Diver’, the huge hit single ‘Rainbow In The Dark’ (almost left off the album!) and finishing with ‘Shame On The Night’. Featuring fellow Rainbow cohort Jimmy Bain on bass and the talents of Irish guitarist Vivian Campbell from the NWOBHM band Sweet Savage, the album was certified platinum in 1989.
