Synopsis

Following the huge success of ‘Pyromania’ in 1983, Def Leppard’s ‘Hysteria’ (1987), the titanic fourth album from the Sheffield hard rockers, produced no less than seven hit singles. More than three years in the making, its production was hampered by a near fatal accident in which drummer Rick Allen lost an arm. The recording was beset with problems until they settled on their original choice of producer, Robert John “Mutt” Lange. Certified 16 times platinum in the US alone, according to Q magazine, its “vocals are stacked on top of each other until they scrape the ionosphere; guitars are primped within an inch of their lives”. The album topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic, and remains their biggest seller.
